Audiobook Month: Where to get audiobooks and what to listen to this month

Happy Audiobook Month everybody! To celebrate, we’d love to share where you can source audiobooks from, as well as provide some audiobook recommendations from Dyslexia Canada Team members.

Where can I get access to audiobooks?

There are many websites and apps where you can source audiobooks. Check out some of the places below.

CELA - Centre for Equitable Library Access

CELA is a public library service for Canadians with print disabilities. Many of their books are available in audio format with different download options such as CD, ZIP or direct to a player.

Libraries and the Libby app

Any local library should have many options available for audiobooks. They can be checked out just like regular library books and you can also use the Libby app for even more convenience. Libby is free to download and use, you just need your library card!

Other apps ($)

Audible - One of the most popular audiobook apps with a monthly subscription.

Kobo - With Kobo your first audiobook is free. They also have lots of deals this month to celebrate Audiobook Month.

Audiobooks.com - With a monthly subscription, you can gain access to over 150,000 audiobooks.

Google Play Books - A free app where you can purchase individual audiobooks over in the Google Play Store.

Nook Audiobooks - Nook Audiobooks is a platform created by Barnes & Noble. Nook features an online store where you can buy books rather than offering a monthly subscription.

Audiobook recommendations from Dyslexia Canada Team Members

Anna Ashbarry - Communications Manager

Anna can’t help but recommend Maggie MacCormack and the Witches' Wheel by Kaja Blackley.

When you purchase this audiobook, 10% of the profits will be donated to Dyslexia Canada and 10% will be donated to Dyslexia Scotland to support both children and adults with dyslexia.

Anna also recommends listening to the first Special Episode of Dyslexia Canada’s podcast Sharing Stories to learn more about this book series and the audiobook narrator, Linda McDade.

Christine Staley - Executive Director

Christine’s favourite audiobook is Born a Crime by Trevor Noah. This book is both written and narrated by Trevor Noah himself and features his own personal story of what life was like growing up in South Africa.

Natalie George - Programs Coordinator

Natalie is excited to recommend the Harry Potter audiobook series. The Harry Potter books have been narrated by Stephen Fry and Jim Dale.

Kellie Krake - Advocacy Advisor

Kellie isn’t the biggest audiobook listener but does listen to lots of podcasts. If you’re looking for an alternative to audiobooks and are wanting to get into podcasts, she recommends Inside Curling with Kevin Martin & Warren Hansen.
