Equitable Education for Students with Reading Disabilities

The Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission is hosting an online public information session about its Equitable Education for Students with Reading Disabilities initiative on Thursday, March 7 at 6:00pm CST.

The Commission’s Systemic Initiatives team has identified a number of key issues that need to be addressed in order to make education more equitable for students with reading disabilities. These are documented in our recent report.

Guest speakers for the event will be Dyslexia Canada’s Alica Smith, Dr. Andrea Fraser of Mount Saint Vincent University, Maria Soonias Ali of the Saskatchewan Human Rights Commission, and Kirsten Downey, one of the 29 parents who filed a group human rights complaint that led to the Commission’s systemic investigation into the identification, treatment, and accommodation of students with reading disabilities in Saskatchewan.

The speakers will discuss reading disabilities, curriculum, instruction, pedagogy, parental concerns, as well as potential solutions and improvement to the challenges raised in the “Equitable Education for Students with Reading Disabilities” report.
